Tricks with Dime and Penny
Here is a video with a variety of tricks.
Setup
You are supplied with a gimmicked penny and a bang ring. You will need to supply a regular dime. Place the gimmicked penny with the head side up inside the bang ring. The coin should sit inside the ring on the rim. Hold the bang ring between your thumb and middle finger, rim side up. Place your index finger on top of the coin to hold it in place. Hit the bottom of the ring against a hard surface a few times. This will cause an insert to separate from the penny. You will now have two pieces, a penny shell and a special insert with a penny tail on one side and a dime on the other side.
Here are some tricks you can do with the gimmicked insert and penny shell:
Fade Away Coin Trick
This move is extremely deceptive and highly amusing! Hold the dime insert, with the half shell overlapping it, between the first and thumb of the left hand; the edges resting against these fingers, the coins parallel to the floor. Place the thumb and first finger of the right hand above and below the two coins, pressing against their flat surfaces, and while pretending to remove the dime with these fingers, actually press it into the shell. Remove the right hand and with a rubbing motion of the thumb and first finger, “disintegrate” the coin into nothingness. Turn the penny remaining in the left hand over to display both sides, Spin it in the air and catch it. Place it in your pocket to conclude the effect.
Watch Trick
This is a quick vanish and reproduction of the dime. It’s offbeat due to the patter used for the routine. Place the real dime under the face of your wristwatch. Place the gimmicked coin (separated) on the table. Pick up and place the insert in your left hand. The penny shell is places onto but overlapping the insert. Close your hand, nesting the coins, thus locking them. With your right hand, remove the penny, and simultaneously turn the left hand palm down and flat onto the table. The spectator will assume that you are concealing the dime. The right hand displays the penny as you comment about the dime having vanished. Of course the spectator will refer to your left hand, slowly lift the hand to show the dime has indeed vanished. Call attention to your wristwatch, and then remove the dime from underneath the face of the watch.
Coin Through The Table Trick
Preparation – Place the real dime on your lap. The gimmicked coin, separated, goes on the table. With the two coins on the table and overlapping one another, show the right hand empty. Then place it under the table. When the right hand is under the table, secretly obtain the real dime from your lap. The left hand covers the two coins at which point they are nested and locked – do this during a magical rubbing motion – Lift the left hand to show that only the Penny remains. The right hand then comes up from under the table in a fist – which opens to reveal the dime!
Considerations
- Be sure to squeeze the gimmicked shell/insert before handing it to a spectator for examination. This will ensure a tight fit and prevent them from discovering the secret.
- If your coins fit too tightly do not be concerned. It may take several separations of your gimmicked coin to get it to break in.
- If your coins fit too loose and the insert falls out, it is easy to tighten them. Place the penny shell in the bang ring upside down with the cavity facing upward. Very slowly apply pressure to the center of the shell with your thumb. This will bend the shell slightly concave, and tighten the coins slightly. Do this a little at a time until you are satisfied with the fit.
Most of the effects are accomplished by secretly nesting the penny shell and insert together, causing the dime to apparently vanish. A duplicate dime can then be revealed in a variety of ways to create many different effects.
Here are some other ideas you can do with your Dime and Penny
Vanish the Dime - Put the gaffed dime on the spectator’s palm. Put the penny over this coin, but don’t allow them to close together. Slide the coins together as your spectator closes their hand tightly over the coins, forcing them together. Snap your fingers and have the spectator open their hand. The dime has vanished!
Coin Vanish with Silk – Put the gaffed dime on the silk. Place the penny over this coin, but don’t allow them to close together. Draw the four corners together and hand the silk to the spectator. Rub the coins together from the outside of the handkerchief locking them together. Allow the spectator to open the hanky revealing the dime has vanished!
Drinking Glass Vanish - Place the coins on the table slightly overlapping. Cover the coins with a glass. Slowly shake the glass back and forth allowing the coins to nest. Tap the coins with the glass locking them together. Pick up the penny revealing the dime has vanished!
Playing Card Vanish - Place the coins on the table slightly overlapping. Cover the coins with a playing card. As you do, slide the coins together allowing the coins to nest. Push the center of the card locking them together. Snap your fingers and pick up the card to reveal that the dime has vanished!
Coin Through Table - Place the gaffed dime and the penny shell overlapping it on the table. Your left hand secretly holds the duplicate dime under the table. Place your right-hand palm down on top of the two coins and rub them against the table, locking them together. Tap the duplicate coin against the bottom of the table, then lift your right hand revealing the dime is gone. Your left hand brings the dime out from under the table!
Coin Through Silk - Place the duplicate dime in your right hand. Place a silk on top of your hand concealing the duplicate coin. In the center of the silk, place the gaffed dime and the penny shell. Close your hand over the coins locking them together. Open your hand and allow the spectator to pick up the half dollar. Slowly slide the silk away revealing the dime in your hand.
Sealed Envelope Penetration - Seal the duplicate dime in an envelope. Place the envelope on the table and put the penny and insert on top of the envelope. Have the spectator choose copper or silver. If he says copper, tell him the copper goes. If he says silver, tell him the silver stays. Shake the coins and vanish the copper coin. Have the spectator open the sealed envelope revealing the dime inside!
Coins Across
EFFECT: In this effect, you will create the illusion of a coin traveling from one hand to another.
TO PERFORM: Start by classic palming the duplicate dime in your right hand. Display the penny and shell in your left hand and place them on the table overlapping them slightly. Cover the coins with your left hand and place your right hand a couple of feet away palm down. Rub the coins with your left hand allowing them to nest, at the same time, release the duplicate coin from your right palm. Slowly remove your hands showing the dime has traveled from one hand to the other.
Coin Finds a Selected Card
EFFECT: The spectator selects a card and replaces it back in the deck. A penny and dime are placed on top of the deck and covered with a shot glass. The dime magically vanishes from the glass only to reappear in the deck of cards right above the selected card!
TO PERFORM: This is an incredible effect using a deck of cards with your coin set. Start by holding the duplicate dime underneath a packet of cards in your left hand. The coin should be held between your left fingertips and the card pack. Slowly spread the cards between your hands allowing a spectator to select a card. As the spectator looks at his card, you will separate the deck into two halves with one half in each hand. The card is replaced on the right-hand packet and the left packet with the duplicate dime is placed on top of the selected card. You now bring out the penny shell and copper insert and place them on top of the deck overlapping each other. Cover the coins with your hand and nest them together. Show the dime is gone. Cut the cards to the duplicate dime and turn over the card underneath it, revealing the selection!
Traveling Coin
EFFECT: A coin travels from beneath a playing card to another card under the spectator’s hand.
To PERFORM: Start with the duplicate dime held under a deck of cards in your left hand. Deal a playing card onto the table but as you do, pull the duplicate dime from under the deck placing it on the table beneath the card. Have a spectator place his hand on top of the card. Place the penny shell overlapping the dime insert on top of the table. Cover them with another card. Rub the card on top of the shell and insert nesting them together. Lift the card showing the dime is gone. Have the spectator lift his hand and card revealing the dime has traveled!
